Happy New Year

Social Media and New Year's Resolution Sharing

A new year is here, the world is still spinning, and for 45 percent of the American population, it’s time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes.

While many of us here at The Brandon Agency have made a New Year resolution (check them out below), we wanted to take a closer look at what exactly to rest of America is resolving to do or not do this year.

Using the Cision/Radian6 social media monitoring tool, we conducted a search to track what people were saying online about their New Year’s resolution between December 28 through January 3. Here’s what we found:

· There were approximately 500,059 combined mentions of “new year’s resolution” and “resolutions.”

· 93 percent of people who mentioned the word “resolution” did so via Twitter.

· 70 percent of mentions were positive about resolutions.

· 29.5 percent of mentions were negative about resolutions.

· The most frequently mentioned words include: family; start; time; lose; work; love; read; weight; best; change; happy; eat; life; better; healthy; and change.

These keywords fall right in line with some of the most popular yearly New Year’s resolutions. According to a recent survey conducted by LA Fitness, the five most popular 2013 resolutions include:

1. Read more books

2. Save more money

3. Lose weight

4. Redecorate

5. Take better photos

Whether it’s eating less of your favorite junk food, reading more, or getting out of debt, if you really want to follow through on your New Year’s resolution, follow these easy tips:

· Be realistic. Make attainable goals. Instead of vowing never to eat your favorite food again, strive to eat is less often than you do now.

· Break your goal up into monthly goals. It can be harder to follow through on a resolution when you know you must maintain it for a full year. Instead, break up your goals month by month. For example, if you want to lose twelve pounds this year, make a goal each month to lose one pound.
